Here a few key causes of the American Revolution, a major part of Boston's history is based off of these important events.

First, the French and Indian war, which ranged from 1754 to 1763. The British (Red coats) fought alongside the Colonists. After the war, the colonists needed protection so they stayed in colonies, but they had a lot of debt because of the war, and the troops weren't free. So the British decided to tax the American colonists. Which leads us to a another major trigger to the American Revolution-taxes
Americans got mad and said they shouldn't have to pay taxes without the British representation. Then came along " No taxation Without Representation." Americans began protesting against the British which soon got violent and is now known as the Boston massacre. Soon after the British put a tax on tea, which sparked more rebellious acts from the Americans. They protested against the Tea act by spilling all of the Tea which had a lot of value to it into the ocean.
