Building America's First Subway

In the late-19th century, the streets of the City of Boston became overcrowded with dozens of travelers. After deciding that a subway system would be the best solution to this problem, the city began construction in 1895. The construction process faced many major problems including the discovery of a massive graveyard buried deep underground and complaints from religious citizens who viewed the subway system as a gateway to Hell. However, the subway system eventually completed construction and began operations two years later in 1897. Boston's subway system later became the United States' first subway system with other cities such as New York and Philadelphia soon following in the early-20th century.
